I get asked pretty often what my favorite restaurant in New Orleans is. My response goes something like this: “oohhhh that’s a tough one. What neighborhood slash category are we talking about?” Yes, I have a working list of favorites, but it’d be wrong to just pick one. Unnatural even. I can, however, stomach picking a favorite from each area in the city. For example, (teaser alert) Adolfo’s is my favorite restaurant on Frenchmen Street and Taceaux Loceaux is my favorite food truck (you knew these things already if you follow me on instagram). So what i’m going to do is give you a show and tell of my favorite places to eat, according to the area and/or category over the next several weeks, so stay tuned!

First up, is Uptown.

My parents helped me move into my apt last summer when I moved to Nola, and after that very long moving day, we went to Baru. We ended up ordering almost everything on the menu, and we even ordered some dishes twice. They have Latin/Caribbean tapas, perfectly concocted cocktails and a sexy ambiance. I love going when the weather is just right to sit outside. Let me also add that any place that has year-round outdoor string lights gets bonus points. There’s something about white lights that just classes up the place, ya know?

It’s a small restaurant, and they don’t take reservations so you may have to wait for a table, but just order a margarita and chill because it’s worth the wait.

Funny enough, my favorite thing on the menu is $7, which makes sense because the main ingredient is corn. But y’all….this Mazorca dish is out of control. It must have some sort of food crack in it. What do they call it? CHEESE. Yes, cheese!! Just order this, please. Twice.

Some of my other favorite plates are: the ceviche (oohh I once went on a night where they featured three different kinds!!), Ostras (deep fried oysters with *CILANTRO AIOLI and *CARAMELIZED ONIONS), the Chuzos (grilled skewers of skirt steak) and the Arepas. But you really can’t go wrong with anything you order. It’s all good!

Not to mention, it’s very reasonably priced, they have a great lunch menu and it’s casual. So when someone asks me where to go eat in the Uptown area, I usually always tell them Baru first.

*These guys are totally dueling for best two-worded food combos [insert four “schwings!”]. Notice how “deep fried” couldn’t even compete?! hmm maybe I should rethink my favorite dish here…
